Nature Based Kindergarten

Reggio Emilia Inspired Kindergarten

Children must be ready to enter kindergarten this fall.

Nature Based Kindergarten is a model that prioritizes social and emotional development, compassion, empathy, and collaboration in an outdoor setting. Using the surrounding forest and community space of the SHED Children’s Campus, the children will be given the time and space to actively explore, engage, and learn in nature.

Embracing the seasonal cycle of the natural world, children and adults will co-create their learning experience through research and documentations of their discoveries. Interdisciplinary project based work will be supported as a community of learners. Guiding children’s learning development as individuals will also be paramount. Creativity, tinkering and imaginative play will be embraced as well as the development of important content curriculum by using the Massachusetts Department of Education standards as a roadmap.. Documentation of the individual child and group learning will be used as an ongoing form of assessment.

Nature Based Kindergarten WILL BE OUTSIDE in all weather – exploring the fields and outdoor spaces surrounding SHED Children’s Campus! Children will learn to be responsible for themselves and belongings as they will be an integral part of packing their gear for school. Children will need to have proper gear for all seasons – we will post more on this as sign up begins. Nature Based Kindergarten is a 5 day per week program.

Parents are always welcome in our classrooms. SHED educators interact daily with parents and hold two yearly parent conferences.

Nature Based Kindergarten Educator:

Nicole Pelletier

Our forest classroom was created by and will be lead by Nicole.

In Reggio, the environment is the Third Teacher. Our home on the stunning campus of Phillips Academy gives your child a pastoral setting in which to learn and explore.

Most of the studies agree that kids who play outside are smarter, happier, more attentive, and less anxious than kids who spend more time indoors. While it’s unclear how exactly the cognitive functioning and mood improvements occur, there are a few things we do know about why nature is good for kids’ minds.

Help Us Build A Yurt!

Our newest dream is to build two yurts on campus:

one for our Nature Based Kindergarten children (to be built in the fall) and one to promote health and wellness for our teachers and the broader Andover/Merrimack community (to be built in the spring).

Donate today and help our little learners stay curious and cultivate their love for learning!
